'The Art Of Cinema' is the oldest film magazine in Europe, with a publication history dating back to 1931. In addition to the print edition, there's an online version, a contemporary digest of perspectives on the current film industry. Initially, the magazine's team approached us with the intention of developing a website that had a design separate from the print version. Nevertheless, we dared to practice in a comprehensive redesign.
Logo
When designing the logo, our goal was to convey the magazine's status and hint at its rich, lengthy history while keeping it contemporary and far from being outdated. This led us to choose Modern fonts from the 1960s, particularly the Editorial Grotesc font. We made an effort to ensure the logo not only harmonizes the past and the present but can also transform easily into an icon.
Print version
The print version of 'The Art Of Cinema' exists independently of the online edition. They even have different logos. Although the magazine's team approached us only for website design, we developed a unified concept. We ensured that the logo and corporate style we created for the online magazine would harmonize with their print counterparts.
Website
The inspiration for the website, as well as the logo, draws from the Modern style of the 1960s. This choice serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it pays homage to the magazine's long and illustrious history. Secondly, it conjures up thoughts of the golden age of cinema. We employed a monochromatic color palette and opted for sleek, minimalist fonts. Our goal was to maintain a clean and orderly design, following the principles of Swiss typography.
We also revamped the website's structure, incorporating a wealth of new information and sections. We applied font encoding to all the new blocks. The site scales seamlessly and will readily adapt to long-term changes. While crafting this flexible structure, we've managed to preserve the publication's uniqueness and character. The design turned out fresh and distinctive, successfully addressing all the challenges set by the editorial team. And even a bit more.
